How Hopper Price Prediction Works: Buy Now or Wait?
Hopper's price prediction is the app's read on whether a flight's fare is likely to go up or down before you book — so you know whether to buy now or wait. It's the feature Hopper is best known for, and once you understand what it's actually telling you (and what it isn't), it becomes one of the most useful tools in travel planning.
And if you haven't downloaded Hopper yet, new users who sign up through this referral link and enter promo code marshaw4ja get 10% off hotels with qualifying spend — with unlimited savings.
How price prediction works
- Hopper has learned from years of past fares: how prices on each route move as departure gets closer, by season, day of week, and demand.
- When you search a route with specific dates, the app compares today's fare to that history and forecasts where it's likely headed.
- You get a clear call: "Buy now" if it's a good price or likely to rise, or "Wait" if a drop is expected. Hopper usually shows what the call is based on — like "about 20% below what this route usually costs."
What it covers — and what it doesn't
- It's for a specific route and date pair — like New York ⇄ Miami, December 18–26.
- It forecasts the cheapest economy fare on those dates. It doesn't cover a particular airline, cabin, or a nonstop-only filter.
- It's a forecast, not a promise. Fares can change for reasons nobody sees coming. Over time, though, following the call tends to save money compared with booking at a random moment.
A related tool: booking-window timing
Separately, Hopper can show how fares on a route usually move as departure gets closer. That tells you how much of the cheap period is left and how fast prices tend to climb after it.
The two tools answer different questions: the forecast answers "is today's price good?" — the timing pattern answers "what does waiting usually cost?" Used together, they take most of the guesswork out of when to book.
Where it really pays off: holiday travel
It's late October, so Thanksgiving and December fares are moving right now. The peak windows — the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the Sunday after, and the days around Christmas and New Year's — sell out earliest and climb fastest. This is exactly the moment when a buy-or-wait call is worth the most: waiting a week on the wrong route can cost real money, and so can panic-buying a fare that was about to drop.
If you have a trip in mind, open Hopper, search your route and dates, and watch the trip so you get notified when the price moves. New to the app? Download it through the referral link first, then add code marshaw4ja in Profile → Wallet → Add promo code before your first hotel booking.
How to put it to work today

Price prediction won't catch every fare swing, but it beats guessing — and during the holiday booking rush, an informed guess is the difference between a deal and a surcharge.
